Inspired by the Jolly Rogers squadron, these crafty socks celebrate the courageous legacy of the squadron and display Jolly Rogers' widely recognized and feared insignia, the ominous white skull-and-crossbones on all-back tails.
The famed and feared skull-and-crossbones markings first flew in World WarII with VF-17, later redesignated as VF-61. Following their decommission in 1959, the VF-84 Vagabonds were redesignated as the Jolly Rogers to preserve the history of their "bones". When they were equipped with the F-14A Tomcat, they participated in the motion picture “The Final Countdown” which propelled the skull-and-crossbones-adorned F-14 to gain worldwide recognition.
In 1995, the VF-84 was decommissioned and VF-103 (formerly the Sluggers) became the new Jolly Rogers and adopted Ensign Jack Ernie’s skull-and-crossbones on all-black tails. Now in its fifth home, the Jolly Rogers preserve their rich history and achievements across generations and squadrons.
